Tic Tac Toe

On May 11th, our family got bigger again. My brother-in-law and his wife welcomed a beautiful baby boy. Everyone is doing very well, and baby is quite mellow so far. We have yet to meet our nephew, but that gives me a little more time to finish his quilt...

I was queen bee in The Beehive Quilts in April, and my fellow mates sent some beautiful blocks along my way. I added seven more blocks to get a total of 20 blocks, and this morning I was able to finish the top. I even found a piece of owl fabric that's big enough for the backing in my stash, so hopefully this baby will be finished soon...

HST sampler quilt - a finish

Last Saturday, I got into a sewing frenzy. I needed to finish my Half Square Triangle Sampler quilt since I had to drop it off on Monday and Saturday was the only free day. Thankfully, I did not meet any glitches along the way and got it finished just in time!

This quilt will be raffled off in two weeks at my kids' school party. The school celebrates its 20th birthday, and all the money from the raffle will go to a school project in Peru. All the parents were asked to give some prizes. And while others contributed a night in their chalet in the Swiss alps or a sailing trip on their yacht across the lake (no kidding!), our means are a bit smaller so a quilt was the natural choice.

I quilted this with Aurifil 40 wt in white. The solid is Kona Snow. You can't really see from this photo, but I also made the binding in the same fabric (a first for me!).

For the back, I used this somewhat psychedelic print from IKEA. I do not have a quilt shop close by, and I needed the fabric fast, so ordering was not an option and IKEA the only choice.

I hope it will find a new home with someone who is able to appreciate something handmade...

I'm linking this finish up with crazy mom quilts for Finish it up Friday!

Trip down memory lane

15 years ago I spent a year studying abroad in Aberystwyth, Wales. I know I it sounds like a cliche, but this was one of the best years of my life. I met a lot of new people, some of whom I'm still friends with, I learned horseback riding, I partied a lot and studied a bit.
This spring, my former roommate suggested we take a trip down memory lane. And last week, we did!

It was strange and also a bit surreal, a lot has changed in 15 years. But a lot has also stayed the same, and throughout this trip there was a lot "I remember this and that..."

This used to be my house, 1st floor on the right, and yes, we were right on the promenade and had the best sea view ever!

We also headed north and visited Harlech and Caenarfon Castle:

And swung by Will's house on the way back:

Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon

I'm grateful for a husband and a mother-in-law who made this trip possible for me...
