08/2014: Simply stripes

Sometimes, simple is best.

I came across a yard of striped cotton jersey while cleaning up my sewing room last Saturday and decided I have to make a new shirt right that moment. I picked that fabric up at Hilco a while back and it's so great to sew with.
Very happy how this shirt turned out. It will join the already high stack of white and blue striped clothes in my closet.

Unfortunately, it prevented me from turning this pile into a duck, a ladybug and a pirate costume for carnival. I guess I know what I'll be doing from now until Thursday...

Six years ago today...

...I became a mother for the first time. Changed my life in the best way.

And I know this is not a food blog, but I wanted to share the cake he requested:

In case you are wondering: those nutshells behind the candles are supposed to be lifeboats for gummiebears...

I hope your day was as fun filled as ours!

07/2014: It's a plus!

Last month, I posted a lot of WIPs and wrote that I'm so excited about this one and that one and I can't wait to finish them. Well, and then a giant sloth came and replaced me. It forced me on the couch in the evenings and kept me away from my machine... Thankfully, I was able to get rid off it and finish a quilt.

Ever since seeing this and this quilt, I was in love and had to have one myself. I started sewing the first blocks right after Christmas. And since January was my month in the Bee Germany, I thought I put my fellow bees to work on that. I am really, really thankful for all the nice blocks I received. They are a bunch of very special ladies! Thanks, girls!

It's a nice throw size, I did not measure it, but it's big enough to snuggle under comfortably. Which is all that matters!

I quilted it with zig zag lines with a natural thread. I did not want the quilting to pop out too much on this one.

IKEA for the back. But this is just so fitting, no? And of course it's bound in red, my preferred color for binding.

06/2014: Botanics to wear

Last Friday, I got it in my head that I need, need, need to sew a top with Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander. The only problem: I had maybe a fat quarter of my preferred print left. Enter Susanne, one of the lovely host of Monday Makers: I e-mailed her and guess what, the fabric was in my mailbox the very next day! It's good to have friends with a fabric shop...

It's almost finished, I still havn't decided if I want to add sleeves or not. It has a light, airy feel to it, so I think it would be perfect for summer as well.  Any suggestions, sleeves or not?

This print is my favorite from this great fabric line. I love the color, it goes so well with so many other colors in my wardrobe.

I'm quite proud of my homemade piping! That's also one of those things that seem scary in the beginning, but turn out to be quite harmless once you actually sew with it...

So thank you, Susanne, for your great service. I can't wait to wear this to work on Wednesday!

Winner, winner!

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a nice weekend. I still owe you a winner. So drumroll please for...

ratama, who was picked by random.org and who left the following comment:

"Oh Mist, das ist echt ärgerlich. Ist schon komisch, wie unterschiedlich sich Nähmaschinen verhalten, ich benutze oft Polyesterbatting und habe selten Probleme damit. Aber Hochachtung vor deinem Durchhaltevermögen"

Thanks, everyone, for leaving nice comments and taking part in my little giveaway!

Fresh sewing day

Happy February 1st! The first month of 2014 is over, time to take a look back at my January sewing. I had a super productive month. I finished two quilts, a pillow, a tunic and a pincushion and I started various other projects. January was also my month in the Bee Germany, and my fellow bee members sent me lots of lovely plus blocks.

Hopefully, February will be just as great sewing-wise, and maybe with a new machine as well (if I ever make up my mind about which one to buy. Any suggestions?)

Don't forget that there's still time to enter my giveaway!
