WIP Wednesday: Catching up

Happy 4th of July! I can't help but feel a bit sentimental today. Exactly a year ago, we boarded a plane in San Diego to fly to Germany. We had sold all our furniture, gave away stuff and shipped off the rest, and left a lot of friends behind... . Don't get me wrong, I'm happy here, but I was also happy there and sometimes I just miss it (the beach! the weather! the zoo! Balboa Park! oh, and did I mention the beach?)

But all the sniffling aside, I was feeling very close to my fellow San Diego Modern Quilt Guild members this past week. I had some major catching up to do on bee blocks. I was about two month behind (sorry, Barb and Pam!). But now I'm up to date!

Barb wanted to have some bubble blocks from us. She send the grey background fabric and gave us a rough color scheme to work with from our own stash. Here's what I came up with:

I put some Tea Garden by Free Spirit in there, some Flea Market Fancy, Kona Cotton Turquoise, Aqua and Tangerine. I hope she'll like it. Smart choice to have this as a bee quilt, I think I'd go nuts doing an all applique quilt...

Next up is Pam, who asked for scrappy, wonky Log Cabin blocks with a fussy cut center. She plans to make quilts for the NICU of the UCSD Hospital. I made two so far, but I think I'll make some more, just for the fun of it. I have tons of scraps and already fussy cut centers left over from other projects, and since this is such a good cause, why not?

But the biggest project this past week was my starflower Salt Air quilt. And I finished the top! Yay me! I'm so excited about this one, it's so summerish. I love the fabric (Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket) paired with the Kona Aqua. I guess it helps that Aqua is one of my all time favourite Kona colors...

It will be a very generous sized lap quilt (roughly about 60 x 80 inches). I haven't made up my mind about the quilting yet, any ideas?

From the leftovers of the Salt Air fabric, I did a little improv piecing. This will find it's place on the quilt's backing.

I hope everyone in the US will have a sunny, relaxing holiday! I'm linking up with WIP Wednesday on freshly pieced, this week guest hosted by the very talented Jessica from SewCrafyJess!
